Elder Roosevelt Carlisle was born on December 7, 1950 in Newbern, Alabama. After a short battle with cancer, he departed this life peacefully at 5:45 pm on Monday, June 20, 2016 at home surrounded by his family.
Roosevelt dedicated his life to Jesus at an early age and rededicated his life in the 1980’s. In 2012, he was ordained an Elder at the Oakridge Temple Church of God in Christ, where he served faithfully until his health would no longer allow him. He loved the Lord and would share the Word and give encouragement to anyone he met.
He was a graduate South Side High School and IVY Tech. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Vietnam War and later enlisted in the Army Reserves. In May 2016, he was honored by traveling to Washington, DC on an Honors Flight where he was acknowledged as a Vietnam Veteran. He retired from DANA Corporation in Fort Wayne after 30 years of service and also drove the van for the League for the Blind. He was well known for being a handyman and auto mechanic.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Rosetta Washington and grandson, Dan Bennett Jr.
He leaves to mourn his passing his loving and devoted wife of 28 years, Dollye; daughter, Renee (Sean) Kelsaw; sons, Domanic, Anwar “Shodie”, Trevel Bell and Nathaniel (Katie) Northington Jr.; father, James (Nell) Avery Sr.; brothers, Larry Washington, Harold Perry and James (Tamertia) Avery Jr.; sisters, Joyce Carlisle, Lisa Brunson, Cynthia Hunter, Brennetta (Randy) Vaughn and Cassandra (David) Hooker; two special aunts, Cecelia Norfleet and Maggie (Eddie) Hill; 21 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
