George Kelly Mitchell Jr.

February 19, 1942 ~ July 10, 2017 (age 75) 75 Years Old

OBITUARY

Sometimes we cannot understand,

Sometimes the path is dim.

And then we must rely on faith,

And put our trust in Him.

So may our hearts remember

In the times of loss and sorrow,

That God will comfort those who mourn,

And will bring a new tomorrow.

George Kelly Mitchell, Jr. was born January 19, 1942.  He departed this life following an extended hospitalization at Lutheran Hospital, July 11, 2017. He was the eldest child born to George Sr. and Pearlie Mills Mitchell Moore in Kinston, North Carolina.

He confessed Christ at an early age and attended public elementary and high school in Pitt County, North Carolina.  He attended college at North Carolina State (Durham) and went on to serve his country by joining the United States Army. George was honorably discharged in 1969. His military training as a skilled rifleman and radio operator would bring him to Fort Wayne. He was employed with the former GTE / Verizon and retired after nearly 40 years of service as a switchman/central office technician. As an entrepreneur, he maintained numerous rental properties, always focused on “making more than he spent and becoming increasingly self-sufficient”.  George was no stranger to hard work!

George was active member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church; he enjoyed hosting their men’s fellowship or the traditional church picnic.  He loved gardening and sharing his prize winning collards and other vegetables with neighbors and friends.  He also relished any excuse, to hold a hog roast and serve his North Carolina barbeque. Within the community he was a dedicated member of the St. Mary’s Lodge No.14 P.H.A. Dressing up for their annual ball called for a special occasion! George was a big fan of “old school” gospel music, the sounds of Mahalia Jackson and Lee Williams. Hearing a good joke or the daily gossip from his regular retiree round table at McDonald’s was also high on his list of pleasures.

George was preceded in death by grandfather and namesake, Kelly Mills, his parents and two brothers, Earnest Mitchell and Curtis Moore.

Left to cherish many fond memories are his son, Brandon C. Mitchell; a  special companion of 35 years, Christine Moore; two brothers, Obie Ray Mitchell (Indianapolis, IN) and John Moore (Atlanta, GA);  sisters-in-law, Seamon Mitchell (Kinston, NC) and Judy Moore (Washington, DC); a favorite first cousin, Ada (Chester) Lovick (Baltimore, MD); a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and longtime friends.

Service is noon, Monday, July 17, 2017 at St. John Missionary Baptist Church with visitation starting at 10 am.
