Mattie Mae (Tyra) Redick was born December 24, 1927 in Eldridge, Alabama. At the age of 90, she passed away on March 13, 2018 at Parkview Hospital - Randallia.
She accepted Christ at an early age at Basemore Church of Christ in Bessemer, Alabama. In, 1954, she moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi where she gained employment at Mercy Hospital. While there she was active in the Civil Rights Movement, participating in numerous marches for the equality for black people.
In July 1966, she completed her diploma at the Post Graduate School of Nursing in Chicago, Illinois.
In 1970 she relocated to Fort Wayne, Indiana. Shortly after, she began employment with Lutheran Hospital as a surgical aide. She retired after 20 years of dedicated service.
She was faithful and longtime member of East Chestnut Church of Christ.
Mother Redick was preceded in death by her parents and seven siblings, Wriley Tyra, Edna Henderson, Margie Montgomery, Frankie Peral Perkins, Hazes Coleman, Hazel Thornton and Marzella Thornton.
Left to carry on her legacy are four generations which inclucle her children, Ozell (Dale) Stewart of Greenville, Tennessee, Elizabeth (Bennie) Brown of Hemet, Tennessee, Delvia (John) Dunning and Zandra Mendoza (Issac) Carswell both of Fort Wayne, Indiana; siblings, Lou George Ginn of Fort Wayne and Arthur J. Thornton of Montgomery, Alabama, 13 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.
