Morristine “Momma Fitts” Fitts was born on April 29, 1925 in Byhalia, Mississippi. She was born to the late George Blackmon and Dora (Kizer) Sumler. At the age of 92, she passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2018.
At the age of 11 she was baptized at the Union Valley Baptist Church in Byhalia, Mississippi.
In 1955, she moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana. Later, after relocating to Fort Wayne, Indiana, she rededicated her life to Christ under the leadership of the late Bishop Jesse White. She served as a Mother of the Church and was currently the oldest living member of True Love Missionary Baptist Church.
For years Momma Fitts, as she was affectionately called, worked for Hall's Prime Rib Restaurant on State Street. She retired in 1985 following her knee surgery after 14 years of service.
Her hobbies included: cooking, canning, celebrating birthdays, gardening, taking pictures and garage sales.
Momma Fitts was also preceded in death by the father who raised her, Willie Sumler; former husband, Leanbirgh Fitts Sr.; children, Willie B. Fitts, Leanzie M. Kelsaw, Billy Ray Fitts and Leanbirgh "Brad" Fitts Jr.; three sisters, Mattie, Elizabeth and Rosie Blackmon and a brother, Roosevelt Boxley.
Surviving her children, Percy (Toni) Fitts Sr., Gloria (George) Smith, Delores Fitts and Shirley Fitts-Robinson; a special daughter, Ruthie Lucas; a son-in-law, Richard Kelsaw along with a multitude of grands, great-grands, great-great grands and other loving family and friends.
