Cheryl Oatts Obituary

Cheryl Diane Jackson Oatts, 71, passed away peacefully, Monday, November 20, 2023 at Sage Bluff Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born February 26, 1952 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Pauline (Hicks) Stewart and Fred S. Jackson Sr. She graduated from South Side High School in 1970 with honors. Upon graduation, she was employed by General Electric Company, until they left the city, as an administrative assistant. During her time of employment, she married William Oatts, which brought two children from the union, Alanna and Chad. After a brief retirement, Cheryl went back to work for Metropolitan Human Relations Commission and was the administrative assistant for former Mayor Graham Richard and current Mayor Tom Henry for several years before her health began to decline. She was the sweet voice and face you would see or hear when dealing with the Mayor.

She was a dedicated member of Pilgrim Baptist Church for over 60 years where she sang on the Young Adult Choir and served faithfully as an instructor for the Usher Board, many times alongside her mother. During her later years, she was a devoted caregiver for her mother until her passing in 2014.

In her spare time, Cheryl loved to bowl with her many family members, watched figure skating, collected unicorns, admired anything Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and enjoyed

Broadway musicals. She loved her family, was steadfast to her faith, and had an unshakable quiet and friendly spirit helping anyone who was in need. She will be remembered for serving others as God commanded. On numerous occasions she put others before herself and wanted the best out of everyone.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Pauline (Hicks) Stewart and Fred S. Jackson Sr., husband, William E. Oatts, brother, Erick Jackson, sister, Jaenicke Jackson, and grandson, Aadan Ford.

Left to honor her legacy, her daughter, Alanna (Ty) Ford and son, Chad (Teri) Oatts; grandchildren Amarion Oatts, Kaila Oatts, Amiah Oatts, Anisha Ford, Arman Ford, Arianna Ford, Kyla Lawson, and Marcus Lawson; brothers Fred S. Jackson Jr., and Darryl (Marcia) Jackson of Severn, Maryland; sister-in-laws, LaVerne Foster and Patricia Jackson, and brother-in-law, James Oatts along a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

The family would like to personally thank Cheryl’s day caregiver, Carmen Smith, Lutheran Intensive Care Staff, Sage Bluff Health and Rehabilitation Center, and Stillwater Hospice for all their tenderhearted care during her illness.
