Dewayne Nelson Sr. was born April 22, 1957 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to the union of Emmerson and Lucile (Agnew) Nelson.
Dewayne attended South Side High School. He later completed his GED and attended IVY Tech and obtained his certification in carpentry. He was employed by Tokheim Corporation until its closure. He then put his carpentry skills to use and worked construction.
As a child, he was baptized at Progressive Baptist Church by the late Bishop Jesse White. Upon the birth of True Love Missionary Baptist Church, he became a charter member, when Mother Lucille moved her membership. He remained there until his adulthood and re-dedicated his life to Christ and Faith Tabernacle Apostolic Church under the leadership of Bishop Kevin and Pastor Lillie Cantrell. He was ordained a minister under their leadership.
Dewayne enjoyed working with children. He would often work with the Life Skill Program for youth with Mr. Mark Outlaw. He shared his skills of carpentry with youth who had an interest in the field.
On September 20, 2021 Dewayne departed this life and was welcomed by those who have already transitioned, his parents, Emmerson Nelson and Lucile Howard-Nelson; siblings, Joseph Nelson, Lawrence Nelson, Wanda Parker, Sheryl Harriston and J. L. Nelson.
Dewayne leaves to cherish his memory, a friend and a love until the end, Carmen Carter-Ritter; his children, Dewayne Nelson Jr., Waynette Nelson, Rashawn Ritter, Kiafa Ritter; siblings, Mary Scott, John Nelson, Willie Nelson, Edward Nelson, Adell Bennett, Shirley Nelson, E. L. Nelson, Donald Nelson, Ronald Nelson, Gary Nelson and Reba Nelson, seven grandchildren, along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
