Celebrating the Life of John A. “Benji” Peterson
John A. “Benji” Peterson, was born on September 6, 2001 inFort Wayne, Indiana to loving parents, Herman and R. Elizabeth Peterson. He was a kind, gentle humble, always willing to help, a good sense of human, athletic and an awesome gift from God.
He was a faithful and active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. In addition to volunteering at the St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen, John was an usher, alter server and all around servant who loved God.
He graduated from Bishop Luers High School with a Core 40 High School diploma in 2020. John was an integral part of the team that won the 2020 SAC boys basketball title. John signed with Manchester to bring a defensive presence to the University. While signing his acceptance letter, John stated "It feels good because I've had this goal since I started playing basketball. This has always been the main goal, so I feel like I've accomplished something”. John passed away March 26, 2021 as a college freshman and basketball player at Manchester University.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Herman A. Peterson, Sr.; maternal grandparents, Rev. John G. and Ruby Stewart; great aunts, Ethel Taylor and Irene Hutchins; aunts, Cathy Peterson and Joan Crawford; uncle, John Lloyd Stewart and cousin, Kristina M. Chaney.
Remaining to forever cherish the memory of his life are his parents, Herman and Liz Peterson; grandmother, Martha Peterson; aunts and uncles, Shirley Williams, Pam (Glynn) Hines, Stanley (Lydia) Peterson, Clyde (Rosabelle) Peterson, Greg Peterson, Margaret (Homer) Chaney, Bill (Helen) Stewart and Lydia Stewart; great aunts, Jessie Peterson, Emma Peterson; godparents, Steven Chaney, Olivia Holdman and Barbara (Terence) Bolling-Williams; girlfriend, Mynae Cole and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
Services will be held Friday, April 9, 2021 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1101 S. Lafayette, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46802. Visitation starts at 10:00 a.m. with Mass at 11:00 a.m. Private Burial at Highland Park Cemetery.
