Mary Elizabeth Barnfield Fikes was born on June 25, 1930 in Uniontown, Alabama to the late Wyatt and Emma Barnfield. At an early age she confessed her faith in Christ and was baptized at Lillie Hill Baptist Church in Uniontown, Alabama. She later joined the First Missionary Baptist Church in Uniontown, Alabama, where she was very active as a member of the Missionary Society and Senior Choir. When her health started to weaken, she moved to Phenix City, Alabama and attended the Beaming Light Baptist Church. She also lived in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
She was united in holy matrimony to the late Leroy Fikes, Sr. She worked at the King Pharr Canning Company and the Garment Factory. She also was an insurance agent for White Angel Insurance Company all of Uniontown, Alabama.
She was a member of the Mizpah Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star Gardenia Chapter. She always talked to God and could be heard praying day and night. Although her body grew weak, she was a strong woman of God. On November 18, 2021, she was called home to glory at the Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Left to cherish her memory are 10 children; Carrie (James) Tucker, Stella Fikes, Annie (Joe) Henderson, and Hattie (James) Chandler of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Elizabeth (Gregory) Nelson of Detroit, Michigan, Leroy (Margaret) Fikes of Uniontown, Alabama, Henry Fikes of Pascagoula, Mississippi, Wyatt (Juliette) Fikes and Mary (Theromiles) Flowers of Huntsville, Alabama, Evelyn (Isaiah) Sumbry of Phenix City, Alabama, 29 grandchildren, one that she raised as her own, 38 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends and a very devoted friend, Mr. Jimmy Jones.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wyatt and Emma Barnfield, seven brothers, Wyatt Jr., Johnny, Joe, Wilbert, James, Samuel and Robert Barnfield, five sisters, Emma Stevenson, Alice King, Susie Bryant, Beatrice Washington and Lille Shephard, and one grandson, Calvin Fikes.
Homegoing Celebration will be held at 12:00 pm Saturday, November 27, 2021 at New Generation Memorial Mortuary, LLC, 418 South Seale Road, Phenix City, Alabama 36869. Reverend Isaiah Sumbry, Officiant
Mother Fikes will be laid to rest in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Phenix City, Alabama.
