Simon Edward Newsome Obituary

On September 20, 1967, Simon Edward Newsome was born in San Diego, California to Simon and Lovetta Newsome. Affectionately called “Eddie” by his family and friends, he was lovingly nicknamed “Sportaru” by his mother—“Sport” for short. On February 10, 1969, his one and only sibling, Stephanie Renee Newsome, was born. Their bond was so close it was often compared to that of twins. The Newsome family traveled frequently as Simon’s father was active in the Navy, but they eventually settled back in San Diego when Simon was seven years old. He attended schools in San Diego through the 12th grade. During his senior year of high school, Simon welcomed his first child, Taneasha Newsome, a moment that filled him with pride, he even named her himself. Three years later, he had Tiffany Newsome, and later, Tatyana Newsome, from his union with Gina Walker. Simon pursued further education at a trade school in downtown San Diego, studying automotive mechanics. Several years later, he met Tammy, his first wife, which led him to Fort Wayne, Indiana. After their divorce, he met and married his second wife, Darla, and together they had two children, Shanya and Anthony Newsome. During this time, Simon also had another daughter, Kyra Newsome. Following his years with Darla, Simon met and married Jamie, with whom he had two sons, Ashton and Tristen Newsome. Yes, Simon was the proud father of eight children, and he deeply loved each one of them.

Simon was a long-term member of NA and was proud of his 26 years of sobriety. He made quite a name for himself in the community with his God-given skills in interior and exterior design and his passion as a brick mason. He loved football, especially as he coached his sons, and supported them through high school football. The Chargers were his favorite football team, and he represented them almost as hard as he represented the Newsome name. He wore several hats: a son, a brother, a father, a “Paw Paw”, and a friend.

On January 2, 2025, he was called home to be with the Lord. Preceding his death were his maternal and paternal grandparents, his father Simon Newsome, and his stepfather Jewel Reverend. He is survived by his mother Lovetta Reverend; his sister Stephanie Edwards and brother-in-law Dana Edwards, a special aunt, Mary Alice Johnson; his children Taneasha Newsome, Tiffany Newsome, Tatyana Newsome, Kyra Newsome, Shanya Newsome, Anthony Newsome, Ashton Newsome, and Tristan Newsome; 15 grandchildren; and a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins. He will be deeply missed, as he had the biggest heart, and the brightest smile, and his laughter was contagious. Simon fought a great fight; even though his time was limited, he fought even harder for his children. In the end, there was a new beginning for him in a place we can only dream of, where there is no more pain. Our hearts have an empty space with his name on it, but the memories, the love, and his infectious laugh will always live in our hearts and replay in our minds.

As we say goodbye to Simone a.k.a. “Eddie”, we hold tightly to the love, joy, and wisdom he brought into our lives. Though he is no longer with us in person, his spirit will live on in every act of kindness, every cherished memory, and every moment of laughter. Eddie, you were deeply loved, and your legacy will continue to shine through all of us. Rest peacefully, knowing you made this world a better place. Until we meet again, you will always be in our hearts.
