Willie J. Mims was born June 23, 1947 to Dock Mims Sr. and Corine (Burton) Mims in Marion, Alabama. Willie passed away Monday, January 5, 2026 at the age of 78, at Canterbury Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Willie accepted Christ at an early age at Oak Grove Methodist Church in Marion, Alabama. After high school, Willie moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1971. He worked for Anthony Car Wash and later in his career he worked for Fort Wayne Community Schools until his retirement.
Willie joined Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in 1975 under the leadership of Rev. P.H. Love, where he served on the Senior Usher Board. Later, he moved his membership to Grace United Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Guy Willis, where he was a devoted member of the finance committee. He remained a faithful member until his passing.
In his spare time, Willie loved to garden, growing all his favorite vegetables every year. He also loved watching movies and sports, including baseball, basketball, and football. His favorite teams were the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bulls and the Chicago Bears. He also loved to travel out of town with his family and friends.
Willie leaves to cherish his sister, Clara Scott-Brooks; special niece and nephew (caregivers) James Jr. and Kimmere Tabb; his sister-in-law, Henrietta Mims; close friends, Clauzene Moss and Al Bates, all of Fort Wayne, IN; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Willie was preceded in death by his parents, Dock Mims Sr. and Corine (Burton) Mims; brother and sister-in-law, Eddie and Francis Mims; brother, Dock Mims Jr.; and sister, Susie Mims.
