Eva Lee Hawes was born to the late China Ester Martin and Bennie Harris on June 21, 1933 in Marion, Alabama. Due to the passing of her mother at a very early age she was raised by her grandparents, Percy and Mary Martin.
On December 26, 2017 after a brief illness, she answered the call, received her wings and flew to glory.
She was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Marion, Alabama, and attended Selma University. She left Alabama and transitioned to Dayton, Ohio. There she met and married (the love of her life) Charles William Hawes. After 10 years in Dayton, Ohio she relocated to Fort Wayne, Indiana where she worked for Magnavox/Raytheon Company for 33 years. After retirement, her passion/ministry to serve in the community lead her to work with Fort Wayne Community Schools, where she was employed for 13 years.
In 1979 she joined the St. John Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. James W. Bledsoe. Eva faithfully served in many capacities within the church as well as her community.
Eva leaves to cherish her memory: three daughters, Charlnita (James) Custard and Cherrie Hawes, both of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Ruth (Chuck) Lewis of Atlanta, Georgia; 5 grandsons, LaMar (Dawn)Custard, Christopher (Kacie) Custard, Stephen Hawes Stanford, Kenny Lewis and Kyle Lewis; 2 great granddaughters, 3 great grandsons, a hosts of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
